Assignment #8

For our new assignment (#8) we have to research the man Louis Riel and learn about him. Then we will have to make a show and in that show we will have to be interviewing Louis Riel (even though he is dead, but that is ok). Check out how I did on my interview with Louis Riel.

___________________________________________________________________

Stefan: Hello everyone, today for our show we will be interviewing the man who came back from the dead...LOUIS RIEL. Give a round of applause for the great man.

Louis Riel: Hello Stefan, how are you doing today.

Stefan: I am very good, thank you.

Louis Riel: I see you have some questions for me today.

Stefan: Yes I do and I'll start off with... When and Where were you born?

Louis Riel: I was born in St.Boniface(Red River Settlement) on October 22, 1844.

Stefan: Wow, that was long ago wasn't it.

Louis Riel: It was, it was

Stefan: Moving on now. Did you like the schools and home you were living in?

Louis Riel: I did like my school because of the nice people and my learning there was good and I was fine living where I lived, I had no isuses living there.

Stefan: When you came to Montreal for your studies on July 5, how did everything go?

Louis Riel: Well at firist it was going very well. I was admitted to the College de Montreal. I was studying very hard and I was a very good student. I was at the top of the classes. But then the day has come of my father's death on January 1864. I had not seen him since I left Red River. Then in March 1865, I left the College de Montreal because my instructors saw that my attitude has changed and they started to think if I had a religious vocation. I then started living with the Grey Nuns. But I made the mistakes of breaking the rules several of times and I kept on missing class. I was then asked to leave the College de Montreal and the convent. So then I went to live with my aunt, Lucie Riel in Montreal. I then fell in love with a woman named Marie Julie. But unfortunently our relationship fell apart because of Marie's parents. They did not like the fact that their daughter was going to marry a Metis. So in July 26, 1868 I returned to St.Boniface.

Stefan: Ok. How did it feel being a leader?

Louis Riel: Well it was a hard job, but I enjoyed it because my comittee worked hard and we accomplished alot of things. But there was also unaccompished things too.

Stefan: Thats to bad u didn't get to accomplish everything. I still have one or two questions.

Louis Riel: I am a patient man, so go ahead and ask as you wish.

Stefan: Do you feel bad of what happen to Thomas Scott?

Louis Riel: I do feel bad because he died, but I still put him to execution to show that the Metis is not a joke and it is taken seriously.Thomas Scott

Stefan: This is my final question. When and why were you executed.

Louis Riel: On November 16, 1885 I was executed and the reason why I was executed was because I tried to lead the Native Americans and the Metis to rebel. But then the rebellion collapsed and then I ran away and returned in Canada in 1885. I also led rebels attempting to secure land titles in Saskatchewan. I was captured then and I begged for forgivness but the courts had no symphony for me, so then I was sentenced to death.

Stefan: Well, thank you for your time. I really had a good time today.

Louis Riel: I had a good time too. Thank you very much.

Assignment # 7

For Assignment # 7 our class had to write and research information about the Museum of Civilization and we are going to have to find a lot of information then. Let's see how it goes for me.
4.a)Which category of Canadian Personalities interested you the most? Did you like the "we inspired", "we founded", "we fought", "we built" or "we governed" section the best? Why?
The category of Canadian Personalities that interested me the most was the category of "We inspired" because it showed how the people in that category worked very hard and had a lot of things to their life, and also it showed how the Canadian writers were writing books, letters and all sorts of things all their life(followed their goal in life).
4.b)Which personality interested you the most? Why?
The personality that interested me the most was the life(personality) of Gabrielle Roy. At the age of 17-20 years, Gabrielle Roy started to write novels, books, stories... I got interested by her life because when she wrote novels, stories, and anything else she did it as it was a test she had to get an A+ on. Gabrielle Roy also wrote her books with happiness and truth,"The truth was that we were two of a kind, each living in fear of finding our poor, shy love for each other misunderstood." She wrote all of her feelings and everything she had to say was in her books. Gabrielle Roy was an amazing writer and she stayed a writer for more then 30 years.http://maisongabrielleroy.mb.ca/en/biography.php
4.c)Suggest three more influential Canadian personalities. Why did you choose these people? Which categories would they fit into?
One of the people I choose is the Canadian Basketball player Steve Nash. I choose him because he showed that not only all Americans get into the NBA and become stars, but also Canadians can too and anyone can if they set their mind to it. Also Steve Nash is not just a NBA player that got into the NBA, but he is also a player that won the MVP (Most Valuable Player) award two years in a row. Steve Nash proved his former coach wrong in university (Ottawa GG's basketball coach) that he can do anything if he focuses and sticks to what he wants his goal to be. I think that Steve Nash would fit into the section "We Inspired" because he showed that anyone can do anything if they set their mind to it and stick to their goal then they can have great success.I got this information from no website but I know this because I was there when the Ottawa GG's coach came to our school.
.
The second person I choose is the Canadian Boxer George Dixon. I choose him because he proved to the world that height does not matter. He was only 5-3 and won many boxing championships and he wear many title belts. People said that he was a Canadian, but had American arms and George Dixon showed them that Canadian Boxers have stronger arms and are just the same as every boxer. I think that George Dixon would fit into the section "We Inspired" because he inspired all the short people that thought they had no game in sports because they were to short. He also that you can do anything you set your mind to. I got this information off of my blog "Assignment #6".
.
The third person I choose is the runner Terry Fox. I choose him because he showed that anyone(I seriously mean ANYONE) can do anything they want if they set their mind to it. Terry Fox had bone cancer in his right leg and he needed money to try to get it cured , so he ran the marathon of hope.. His goal was to run all through Canada but unfortunatly he was forced to stop running because his cancer has come to his lungs. His Marathon of Hope ended outside of Thunder Bay, Ontario. He ran 5,373 kilometres (3,339 miles) with an amputated leg (that's amazing). I think that would fit into the section "We Inspired" because he showed that if anyone wants something really bad they would risk their life to do it. I got this information from this website "http://www.terryfoxrun.org/english/about%20terry%20fox/default.asp?s=1".
.
5. I voted for Gabrielle Roy for my favourite Canadian personality.
.
6. Information will be on Question 7-d.
.
7.d)Which History-Maker did you have the most in common with? Were you able to figure it out from the clues given? What do you share with that person? What are some things that are different between you and that person?
When I did the History-Maker quiz, I had most common with James Naismith. From the clues that were given at the end I was kind of able to figure it out already that it was James Naismith because on the first topic it talked about, it said "I spoke English, but my original rules of basketball have been translated into many different languages." From that I figured it is someone to do something with basketball and then when I clicked on the third clue it said "I pressured to call my new game Naismith ball, but i preferred to call it basketball." When I read that I knew it was the man who invented basketball James Naismith. The things I had in common with James Naismith were that we both were in many different sport teams, we both believe in building good character through sports and education, and our birthdays are both in the winter. But his birthday is at the beginning of winter. The differences between me and James Naismith was that his first language was English and my first language is Serb-Croatian, we both played a lot of sports but he played different sports from me like wrestling, rugby, and lacrosse. Also James Naismith lived all over the world as a kid and grown up, but so far only live in Ottawa. For last he had 1 sister and 2 brothers and I only have 2 sisters. That's what happen on my history match-maker experience and James Naismith is a very interesting man to read about and I think everyone should read about this man.

One hundred years from now, (in 2109!) imagine that students are learning about Canadian History Makers and they discover you. What will you be remembered for? How were you a Canadian History Maker? You are using your imagination, so think about some things that you would like to accomplish in your life and imagine that you have all the accomplishments of your life to look back on. Write a short profile of yourself, imagining the contributions you have made to the future of Canada. (Write this as though you've lived your whole life. You may have been a phenomenal athlete, the first black Prime Minister, cured cancer...use your imagination!)
***Update (Feb. 12, 2:20 p.m.) - Some of you have done an absolutely AMAZING job with this assignment.

Stefan Vijackic was born on January 16, 1996 and died on February 3, 2086. As a kid, Stefan always loved to watch, learn, and play basketball. He loved basketball so much that he always was training basketball in the gym and people even said he slept with a basketball. In his high school years, he was an amazing player on both defense and offense he was great. Not one man could get passed him and he stole the ball a lot of times and on offense he would get under the hoop like no one else can. When he was done his high school years, he went straight into the NBA. Most people thought he only got in because of his skill, but he told everyone that he has worked hard on his education also to get into the NBA. He was drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers. His first year he won the M.V.P award and the next year and the next year. People said he is the next Michael Jordan or he is better. But after a while he was traded to the New Orleans Hornets, and he was trdaed for Kane Fisher. Kane Fisher was always his oppenent in the NBA. When they would be on the court together, they always put on a show. Kane Fisher did have very good game, but Stefan had his game for a longer time. When Kane Fisher was pulled off the a triple double in points, assists, and rebounds. Stefan Vijackic made his own record then. By the time he was 39 years old and he was still in the NBA, everyone thought that he was going to retire the next year. But they were all wrong. He stayed in the NBA for another 9 more years and at the age of 48, he retired. Stefan Vijackic was awarded for the record in the NBA for the oldest player to play in the NBA. Kane Fisher pulled off some amazing things in his career, but Stefan Vijackic stayed long and always played like he was 22 in the NBA. Stefan Vijackic made history to Canada for the Canadian Basketball star and showed that old people will always have game. He will always be remembered for the inspiration he showed to kids and players in the NBA.

The Champion George Dixon A.K.A Little Chocolate

For our assignment #6 our class had to pick a famous black Man/Women that are famous and represented Canada. The person I picked to write my assignment on is the Champion boxer George Dixon.

On July 29 1870; Halifax, Nova Scotia, the champion George Dixon was born. "As a boy he was apprenticed to a photographer, and he became interested in boxing because local boxers came to his employer to sit for publicity photographs." After that time he started to train to become a great champion some day. Dixon had very fast hands and was quick on his feet like a cat. At the height of 5-3 1/2 most boxers would think George Dixon was an easy win, but they were all wrong. George Dixon was so quick when he fought the bigger size oppents, they barly hit 3 punches on him. He moved on every swing anybody took on him. By 1890 Dixon won his firist Bantamweight championship and held the featherweight championship from 1891-1900. George Dixon was the firist black Canadian man to win a boxing championship. Since he was only 5-3 1/2 and was the only black Canadian man who won a championship everyone called him Little Chocolate. He was an amazing boxer.

The important contributions George Dixon made was that he was the firist black Canadian man to win a boxing championship and held it for a long time. Also he proved to the world that Canadian people are very good fighters and he showed that size does not matter in any sport.
Here the websites I got my information from:http://coxscorner.tripod.com/dixon.html and

Assignment #5

As we know it's really cold and we can barely walk a kilometre without getting frozen. Imagine how the early Canadians had to go through to survive this cold wheather. Well your about to find out.

There are alot of reasons why the early Europeans moved to Canada in the firist place. Here are some i researched.http://www.saskschools.ca/~gregory/settlers1.html(I got this from that website.)

-"They were not allowed freedom and worship."

-"The goverment had control over their way of life."

-"Men were forced to serve in the army."

- "There were no jobs or the jobs were low-paying jobs."

-"Farmers wanted to own their own land."

The government of Canada was offering free land to those who were willing to settle on the prairies. Many of the immagrants were very happy about that because they had a chance to own their own land and start a new and better life. Also they had the chance to get a good job and provide money for their family.

But when they came there, they came probably when it was nice and warm and didnt know alot about the cold and winter. They had alot of problems going through the winter. They had to build their own houses for themselves and since it was winter when they started to build their house it was really hard doing it in the freezing cold. They firist had find the right wood, cut and trim the wood, and then start to build their houses.

After all that work they still had problems keeping warm. But luckly for them there was the fur trade and they got then the warm that they can need. Even though they still had like no glass or any thing like that for the windows and do not have that of a stable roof like we do now. They still used the fur to keep the snow and wind to come in the house and make it colder. But with their clothing it made them warm. The women layered overgarments (shawls, scarves or capes) over their dresses. The men wore deerskin or mooseskin jackets and pants, held up by a leather belt. The men wore a traditional woolen hat called a tuque. These hats often had a tassle at the tip and were brightly coloured. But both men and women wore leather moccasins and lined their outer clothes with fur for extra warmth.

Now I'm going to talk about why my family came to Canada and how we dealed with the cold. My whole family came from Former Yugoslavia. In 1992-1996 the war was going on in Yugoslavia. At the time my family had to leave the country in 1995. We didnt have time to choose where we would go and spend our lives. My family came to Canada because at that time, Canada was allowing alot of immagrant immigrants to come to Canada and Canada was and still is a free country now. When my family got here they had friends because people we knew from our Yugoslavia came to Canada too and some of them came before my family did. We didnt know alot about the winter and cold but we weren't to worried because there is winter and cold in Former Yugoslavia, but not as much as there is in Canada. But we lived and now have a good life.

Assignment #4

One of the assignments I looked at was Kane F assignment. I really like how he thought that the people of 2109 will get lazy and not even want to walk no more because they will rely on technology to help them with practically everything. Also I like how he said that the prices of chocolate bars will increase to a much higher price. It was good he put alot of information on his assignment. If anyone would want to look at his blog or assignment go to http://historykanef.blogspot.com/2009/01/assignment-3-canada-2109.htm

Another assignment I read was Amit J's assignment. It was good because he put alot of information on it and had very good information. For example he said that "Robots will take over our jobs." He was thinking a little more years later from 2109 in that sentence, but it was good that he made a prediction. He wrote alot more and see his site at http://historyamitj.blogspot.com/

The last assignment i read was by Talinho. I like his assignment because it had alot of information, he thought alot about what he wrote on his assignment and wrote about good things. On his last sentence he said "Something new happens everyday..." that was good because he is telling the truth and thinking when he said it. See more about his assignment and blog at http://historytalinhom.blogspot.com/

History in the Next 100 Years

Canada has changed alot in the past 100 years. The technology(Internet, TV), the people, and the whole world. These things were helpful in the past 100 years. But, stuff thats will happen in the next 100 years. Well, we will have to guess.
I guess that the people of 2109 will use technology as life. The day will come that people will not even want to do sports or will just make up their own new technology sport. The people that have alot of money will probably not worry about anything. They can get a robot to do their lives for them. I am not saying that this is for sure but it is a prediction.
Also the money in the world will change too. The people that are rich wont worry about that, a million dollars is alot of money now, but then it will not be as much. Also to buy a video game or groceries would be about 100$, now that is alot, now it will seem alot but it will be nothing to those people.
I even wonder how the sports would be like. Probably would not even be baskbetball, but that I hope does not happen. I wonder if they will even play with using their hands or feet, probably a computer mouse.
Also about the politics, how will our USA president be like or new prime minister. But then again this is all predictions and lets hope to live the day to see how the Canada or the world will look in the year of 2109
